2004-06-03 - 4:32 p.m. well i am in the country this month. kinda like a cheers episode. everybody knows your name and every body is nice and everybody is white. i am observing and learning and meeting so many small town americans this month. Ulster County- upstate country side NY. small little family practice where nobody really comes in that the doc doesnt know. i ran this morning along the hudson. meditated last night with my roomate Scott- med student from Wash state. Hes trying to turn me into a hill billy we been listening to Iowa country blues and Robert Burnside and Washington folk and i got him meditating and thinking about social justice medicine and we both been getting up to run on the Hudson. pretty nice life, this country kicking back. but there is race, that dogged reality that creeps into my observations. of the town people, of their view on immigrants, on America. and my feeling that in small town anywhere in the US i will always feel less American than whitebread. and in small town rural India i would be so american that i might sink better into everyday life out here in the country. ss
