2003-10-12 - 5:58 p.m. i am on the network, at home. i got this little wireless card and now i am hooked up.:) borrowing a signal from a friendly neighbor. without reading the newspaper and having no tv or radio or internet can leave somebody pretty damn uninformed. and med students and residents and interns are working too much to get your up to date from them. couple agendas for the day: 1)write letter to Paul Farmer about residency in his Social Justice residency program. just to keep me in mind. 2) Fix resume and cover letter to submit to the doctor at NYU who works with torture victims. 3) letters to international rotation programs. 4) Read Up on EKGs and prepare AIDS report for tues. I have this patient in isolation that has AIDS and pneumonia and i gotta wear all this gear and masks to go see him everyday. then i gotta understand what i see. and know what is normal so i wont miss what is abnormal. i am still getting down my physical exam skills. have to do rectals which are a thrill. Medicine is immensely complex. It has hit me hard these two weeks. I started off not loving this rotation but i am really starting to get juiced about going to work. this is real medicine. The ins and outs of entire organ systems, figuring out what is going on with somebody, ordering labs, analyzing the labs and treating them. and i got SO much to learn. My team is dope. 8 folks. one attending, resident, three interns, three med students looking after about 20 patients. all the residents are dark, all the patients are dark skinned, spanish speaking- so different than my med school class. i am also learning the limits, first hand, of caring for the sick without using that as a spring board or pivot point to become embedded in the community of the living and healthy. worked till like 7:30 on friday. went to a nueorican on friday night. i think i wanna write some performance type stuff and go up on stage one of these days. yesteday i rolled to a knick game with mike lamb. they suck, bad. but the game was a blast. we snuck down like i used to when i was a kid at the laker games. worked on this exciting project with steph and trevor this morning. spent the night in brooklyn. we talked about our visions of the project over mexican food and a bit too many margaritas. steph is juiced about it. its a cool and simple idea. we'll see what bursts out of it. this entry is all ova the place okay, gotta go- sri
